I had the privilege of attending the 8th IDA Symposium in Infectious Diseases in Africa. This experience strongly stirred up my interest in immunology and I am now a PhD Candidate at the LSHTM,UK. My project is focused on characterization of early innate immune responses following a first and subsequent HPV vaccine (Gardasil9) doses, how these are modified by age and their influence on long term serological protection. I am also interested in HLA typing to understand the effect that HLA types have on long term serological protection from HPV vaccine. This study is based at the MRC Unit in The Gambia and at the LSHTM under the Vaccines and Immunity Theme and HLA typing will be done at LSHTM.
I hold an MSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology/ Pan African University, Kenya). My project focused on evaluation of PHIST antigens as potential antimalarial vaccine targets (undertaken at KEMRI-WT). I also hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Health research Methods and BSc in Biochemistry (Pwani University, Kenya).
My long term career goal is to be able to apply immunology and molecular biology skills in vaccinology studies to tackle diseases of relevance in Sub Saharan Africa.
