This is the internalisation of particulate matter by cells. Usually the phagocytic cells are macrophages or neutrophils and the particles taken up are bacteria. The ingested material is contained in a vesicle called a phagosome which fuses with a lysosme to form a phagolysosme. The lysosomal enzymes are important in destruction of the pathogen.
